It all started when Rex Putman made a simple version of a 4x4 grid no tac toe game called Lines. No tac toe is like tic tac toe but if you get 3 in a row, you lose. One day, Rex showed his mother how to play a version of Lines with movable pieces. She suggested adding a way to force the pieces into a four-in-a-row. After that, Rex added "throwing" and Lines became Stitches.
Core Concepts:
• Stitches is a two-player game consisting of a game bag, five black pieces and five white pieces.
• The object of the game is to force your opponent to have four of their game pieces in a row. A row can be vertical, horizontal or diagonal. If you are able to force your opponent to have 4 pieces in a row, you win!
• A Stitches game is composed of two stages: the setup stage and the gameplay stage.
Setup Stage:
• In the setup stage, players peacefully decide who plays with the black pieces, and who plays with the white pieces.
• Players then take turns placing their game pieces onto any unoccupied square, with black going first. This continues until all ten pieces are on the board.
• If any four-in-a-rows are made in the setup stage, the player whose pieces aligned loses.
• Then comes the next stage: the gameplay stage.
Gameplay Stage:
• In the gameplay stage, players try to force their opponent into a four-in-a-row. To do this, players take turns moving their pieces, with black starting first.
• When it is a player’s turn, they have two options for a move: to move regularly or to “throw” an opponent’s piece.
• To move regularly, a player must move one of their pieces horizontally or vertically to an unoccupied square
• To “throw” an opponent’s piece, a player must find an opposing piece that is exactly one square diagonal from one of their pieces. Once found, they must move their piece to their opponent’s square. They can then “throw” their opponent’s piece to any unoccupied square.
When four of a player's pieces line up, they L-O-S-E!
Other Rules:
• Your move is complete once you have let go of the game piece(s).
• If both of the players get four in a row at the same time, the player
who caused the tie loses.
• Feel free to play or create modified versions of Stitches (just don’t sell them, please)!
